Terminal bases, CPUs and communication modules

An AC500 station is built on a terminal base that carries the CPU and communication modules and provides the internal bus. I/O modules attach directly or through expansion, and each carries its own terminal unit for field wiring.

The practical advantage on site is that field wiring lives on the terminal unit, so a failed module can be exchanged without disturbing field terminations — provided you label and verify before removal.

Record the terminal base type, CPU type and firmware, and the exact module order before any intervention. Position matters: the configuration in the engineering tool is bound to the physical arrangement.

Key points

Terminal base carries CPU, comms and the bus; field wiring stays on the terminal unit; record base, CPU firmware and module order first.
