Chassis, controller and modules

A ControlLogix system is a chassis with a power supply, a controller and modules in numbered slots. CompactLogix integrates the controller and I/O in a more compact form for smaller applications.

The controller holds tasks, programs, routines and tags. I/O modules are configured in the I/O tree with an exact catalogue number and revision, and each produces its own tag structure. This is why an offline project must match the physical hardware: a mismatched catalogue number or revision produces a module fault even when the wiring is perfect.

Before any site work, record the controller catalogue number, firmware revision and slot layout. Half of "the program will not download" problems are revision mismatches.

Key points

Chassis, controller, numbered slots; I/O tree entries must match catalogue number and revision; record firmware before site work.
