Corrective, preventive and condition-based maintenance

Run-to-failure is sensible for a low-cost non-critical item with a safe, visible failure. Preventive maintenance replaces or services on time or usage. Condition-based maintenance acts on measured deterioration such as vibration, temperature, oil condition or electrical signature.

The best strategy depends on consequence and failure behaviour, not fashion. A frequent calendar task can introduce defects if it opens equipment that was healthy. Match the task to a known failure mode and review whether it actually detects or prevents that mode.

Key points

Strategy follows consequence and failure behaviour; condition monitoring needs a detectable degradation pattern; every task should address a failure mode.
