Why industrial cybersecurity is different

Operational technology controls physical processes, so availability and safe behaviour are often the first priority. A change that is routine on an office laptop can stop a controller, invalidate a vendor support condition or interrupt a safety function. Security work therefore requires operations, automation, safety and IT to agree on risk and testing.

Start with asset visibility: controller, HMI, engineering workstation, server, network device, firmware, owner, location, function and supported backup. You cannot protect an unknown asset.

Key points

OT cyber risk has physical consequences; changes need operational testing; asset inventory is the foundation of control.
