Turn an objective into controlled deliverables

A project objective becomes manageable only when translated into accepted deliverables, boundaries and criteria. A work breakdown structure divides those deliverables into packages small enough to estimate, assign and verify. It describes the work, not the organisation chart.

State what is included, excluded, assumed and dependent on others. Ambiguous interfaces are where technical projects lose time: identify who supplies data, access, utilities, approvals and acceptance.

Key points

Define deliverables and acceptance; break work into manageable packages; make exclusions, assumptions and interfaces explicit.
